OVER THE SUMMER
MATH – kindly try to have or help your child practice the addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts as often as possible. Without these being memorized, your child will have a harder time in third grade. Learning them over the summer is the best time with the least stress.
It would be great to have your son or daughter do one or two pages in Math Journal #1 or #2 to stay on top of the skills he/she has learned this school year. It will aid your child immensely to keep the skills fresh in their mind! Use the journals to remind you of the many skills available to practice.
READING – Look for the small packet coming home on the last day of school. It has a lot of ideas for what your child can read, and different skills which can be reviewed. As in Math, the student could do one or two pages a day in any one of the Practice, Phonics, Spelling, or Grammar workbooks. Perhaps your child can be rewarded for doing a little school work each summer day!
WRITING – The boys and girls grew to love creative writing more and more throughout the year! The summer season, or vacation time, is a great time to foster this creativity. Help or remind the children of different topics, ideas, or special occasions on which they can write. It should impress them how far they’ve come from September 2009 to June 2010! Write daily, if possible, if only a little bit. Thank you notes are short but great in many ways!
Have writing, Reading, and Math supplies near at hand. For example, have sharpened pencils with erasers, lined paper (plain or decorated), a hard, flat, smooth area on which to write, a list of topics, markers or crayons, a checklist of things each story should have, pictures or stickers to decorate the paper with, and a few bookmarkers.
For Math, every child could use a ruler, index cards on which to write Math facts, or rules, or a list of their hardest skills so you know what they need practice in, scrap paper, perhaps geometric shapes for kids to trace and label, lined paper turned sideways to make addition and subtraction columns easy to keep straight, and calculator so the child can check his/her own answers. Together, make up games to play for fun and learning!
I hope you and your family enjoy the weeks off from school and each other! If I can be of assistance before June 22, kindly call or write me. Email: williamsm@clementon.k12.nj.us
THANK YOU, MRS. WILLIAMS
