Clementon School District

May & June

The end of the year is quickly approaching and we are in the last leg of the school year.  While students seem to be coming down with summeritis (sum’er’i’tis) -n., cannot function properly due to the desire to swim, play, and relax - students need to stay focused and give it their best until the end. Finish strong! Testing is over and we are very proud of all the students for their hard work and dedication.

Parents, as the weather gets warmer, please refer to the code of conduct for what is considered appropriate apparel. Our school is climate controlled, and while it may start to get warm outside it is quite comfortable inside the classrooms. Please consider this when helping your children select their clothing for school. Students may want to bring a sweater or light jacket to stay comfortable in the classroom.

In Language Arts we will be completing Unit 5 and starting Unit 6, as well as finishing our classroom novel, “Loser.”  Unit 5 testing will take place in mid-May.  Students will continue to reinforce their writing skills through a variety of creative writing activities, make sure to check out your child’s writing composition books for new pieces!

DID YOU KNOW? Fast Facts

*The world’s oceans are about 3.5 percent salt. If the oceans evaporated, they would leave a layer salt more than 150 ft. deep on the ocean floors.

*Benjamin Franklin published the first scientifically prepared chart of an ocean current, the Gulf Stream.  The chart made it easier for ships to travel by going with the west-to-east current.

*Many kinds of plants and animals live in coral reefs. As many as 160,000 known marine species live in the coral reefs found near the shores of islands and continents.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at extension 2202 or via e-mail at collinsc@clementon.k12.nj.us.

Math

During the first week of May, 6th grade students will be taking the NJ ASK test.  After we finish testing, we will be working on Unit 9, More about Variables, Formulas, and Graphs.  During this unit we will take a closer look into the distributive property, review order of operations to help us simplify expressions, formulas, and equations.  We will also be learning about the Pythagorean Theorem.

In June, we will be working on Unit 10, Geometry Topics.  We will learn how to differentiate between regular and irregular tessellations.  Other topics that will be discussed are rotation symmetry, topology, and Mobius strips.  Students will be creating their own unique tessellations throughout this unit.

The school carnival will be held on June 5th.  Please remember the 6th graders are responsible for creating the probability games.  Throughout the months of May and June, different aspects of the project will be due.  Please refer to the project overview sheet for more information on deadlines and expectations.

Spelling

Continue to practice your spelling words every night.  This will help prepare you for Friday’s spelling tests.

Mr. Yoder’s

Science and Social Studies

Science is observing, investigating, and experimenting with our natural world and everything that happens in it. Science is amazing because it helps us understand how everything around us works.

This Month we will be investigating ASTRONOMY. The formation of the planets, our solar system, and the universe will be our main focus. Is there life on other planets? We will see if we can find out.

Social Studies will come to life in Mr. Yoder’s class! We will be engaged in re-enactments and model construction; thought provoking exercises and discussions – all to help make history come to life!

This Month we will discuss the French Revolution – “Viva la France!!!”

We will also be digging into the Industrial Revolution and seeing if we can come up with a new invention ourselves!
